Hotel Villa San Giovanni is located in the Medieval town of Erice, where there is a modern cable car which connects the town to the nearby beach of Trapani. The hotel is part of monumental complex San Giovanni which includes the famous San Giovanni Battista Church, erected in the XII century, which contains exquisite marble statues by Antonello and Antonio Gagini. Erice, a 3,000 year old village rising 750 metres above the city of Trapani, is one of the most interesting urban centres in Sicily. The town, famous for its 30 churches, medieval castle, ancient walls, stone streets, panoramas, typical sweets and exquisite Sicilian cuisine. The village is also famous for the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture, which holds scientific courses throughout the summer. The province is a major producer of fine table wines, dessert wines, and olive oil. Every year the wines and olive oils of Trapani win awards at the fairs held throughout Europe. Nearby you can visit: - Trapani: one of the most beautiful and interesting provinces of Sicily. There are several fascinating archaeological sites (Segesta, Selinunte, Mozia), historic centres (Erice, Marsala), beaches (San Vito Lo Capo, Makari, San Giuliano di Erice, Lido di Valderice), and fishing ports (Mazara del Vallo, Trapani). - The Egadi Islands (easily reached by hydrofoil or ferry from the port of Trapani): some of the most interesting diving and swimming centres in the Mediterranean. The Lo Zingaro nature reserve, near the beautiful sandy beaches of San Vito Lo Capo, is one of the best preserved rural areas in Western Sicily.
